AI, or Artificial Intelligence, has been making headway in the world of human resources over the past few years.  Recently, companies have begun to deploy AI tactics and technology into their everyday practices. As a result, some people are concerned about whether the use of AI in HR will put human resource managers out of a job, while others are excited about the possibilities it holds for the profession and the working world.

 

The list of pros and cons for AI in the world of HR is long.  However, for companies considering artificial intelligence software or processes, both sides are worth some thought. Below are some of the most common arguments for and against AI in HR.

 

Pros

Artificial Intelligence streamlines HR processes.

When artificial intelligence is involved in HR, processes that historically took days can take place in a matter of minutes or hours.  AI tools can help HR managers scan through resumes, automate requests for interviews, and also assist in scheduling.  Likewise, AI also can automate an entire onboarding process.

 

Artificial Intelligence does not hold biases.

Bias (of any kind) is a significant concern in the hiring process for most companies. Companies desire a diverse workforce, but unfortunately, the human tendency to discriminate makes it difficult.  Artificial intelligence, however, does not have any knowledge of bias or stereotypes. Therefore, decisions influenced by HR data are more objective than decisions that are not.

 

Artificial Intelligence allows HR professionals to invest in other areas of the business.

When AI takes over some of the time-consuming tasks, HR professionals find themselves consumed with (hiring, onboarding, etc.) they can invest their time in other aspects of the company.  Topics such as company culture, work environment, and continuing education are professional development require more attention than they used to.

 

Cons

Many companies find they do not have the correct processes in place at the current time to accommodate Artificial Intelligence.

The implementation of AI in human resources requires time and staff to change over all of the current processes.  Many companies that desire to implement AI in their workplaces have found that they are not ready for the time and energy the changeover requires.

 

Artificial Intelligence limits human interaction in the hiring process.

Although AI has been proven to simplify the hiring process for HR professionals, many people criticize the practice because it limits the interaction new hires have with company staff – thus making it more challenging to communicate company culture.

 

Artificial Intelligence requires HR professionals to upgrade their skillsets.

The implementation of AI in HR requires a set of skills and knowledge that many HR professionals today do not have.  Therefore, for companies to implement AI processes, they also need to upgrade the skills of their current staff. Doing so can be both costly and time-consuming.

 

The future of AI in HR seems inevitable.  After all, many companies have already turned to AI solutions for different departments of their business.  Just remember, if you choose to implement AI in your HR department it is a process that requires time and patience and does not occur overnight.
